Vertical blinds are a popular choice of window decoration in many homes. They’re suitable for most windows, especially larger ones like those one French and patio doors. One of the main benefits is that they are easy to clean, whatever material they’re made out of – which varies from fabric to wood.
Because of the way the slats hang there is less chance for dust to settle, as opposed to horizontal blinds such as venetian or roller blinds.
There are a few different options when it comes to cleaning your vertical blinds. The most effective methods are spot cleaning, dusting and using a vacuum cleaner. If you use a combination of all three, your vertical blinds will stay looking as good as new. Just make sure that you’re gentle when cleaning the slats, as anything too vigorous could damage the blinds or their mechanisms.
The quickest and easiest way to get rid of visible dirt is by using a vacuum cleaner with an attachment. The most suitable would be a fork-shaped attachment which fits on many vacuum cleaners. Simply put this between the two slats and move it slowly up and down as it gathers dust from both sides. Try not to use an upwards motion, as this may unhook the slats.
Once you’ve completed the vacuuming process, pick up any leftover dust with a lamb’s wool duster. These are great at lifting the dust off the blind, rather than moving it from one place to another. Using the duster with an enzyme spray is very effective.
After years of use, there will come a time when the previous methods won’t work. This is when your vertical blinds will require spot cleaning. Firstly, apply a small amount of cleaner to a clean, dry cloth. Don’t apply cleaner directly to the blinds as too much could damage the material. The trick is to dab the cleaner onto a stain and then remove it gently with a damp cloth.
In some instances, the above tips may not work. If your vertical blinds look dirty you have two options. The first would be to enlist the help of a professional dry cleaning service. But if you want to clean them yourself, they can be scrubbed with some cleaning detergent and a bath of cold water. But always make sure you hang the slats to dry after cleaning to prevent them from bending or creasing.
Before you carry out any thorough cleaning it’s wise to consult the manufacturer’s recommendations, as cleaning instructions for different sets of vertical blinds may vary.
